A key element of Welch’s portraiture is placing the subjects within varied environments and observing how they interact with, contrast against, or become shaped by their surroundings. She is interested in the dialogue between person and place-how context can shift perception, or create unexpected narratives. By placing individuals in spaces that may feel familiar, foreign, or deliberately constructed, she explores how people can embody their environments and find meanings that emerge through that relationship.
